An important part of this learning journey is having opportunities for children to see how far they have progressed.

This year, our focus is on the Abacus Grading Assessment. The assessment provides students with an appropriate goal to work towards based on their learning level.

Preparing for an assessment gives purpose to regular practice. Children know that they are working towards a particular milestone and are encouraged to apply the skills they have developed during their lessons.

At the same time, an assessment should not simply be viewed as a test of whether a child is “good” at the abacus.

For Crestar Learning Centre , it is an opportunity for children to demonstrate what they have learnt, experience completing a formal assessment independently, and recognise the progress they have made. Moving from one grade to another can also give children a tangible sense of achievement and motivate them towards their next learning goal.

Learning to Perform Independently

During an assessment, children must rely more on themselves. They need to follow instructions, manage their time, stay focused, and apply what they have learnt independently.

The final score reflects performance on a particular day, but the journey leading up to it often tells a more meaningful story: a child’s consistency, resilience, confidence and growing independence.

Abacus may begin with beads and numbers, but it can help children develop much more. Every practice session encourages focus and perseverance, while every new grade provides a goal to work towards.
